BlueMix PaaS Dissolves Deep into IBM’s Strategy and Cloud Solution
Almost a year ago, IBM announced it was opening its broad enterprise software portfolio to the cloud and launched an open beta codenamed BlueMix, a new platform-as-service (PaaS) that combines the strength of IBM software, third-party and open technologies. BlueMix provides DevOps in the cloud — an open, integrated development experience that scales. This week IBM highlighted at least two important partnerships for BlueMix.

Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) is extending IBM Bluemix, to CSC’s strong developer ecosystem to help global customers accelerate their transition to the cloud and modernize their applications. CSC and IBM are partnering together through the CSC IBM Center of Excellence to bring global, end-to-end service capabilities that give clients greater choice, agility, flexibility and cost savings. As part of the agreement, IBM will team with CSC to provide joint clients with enablement sessions guiding developers on how to use Bluemix to build cloud-native and cloud-enabled applications. With flexible deployment models, CSC’s clients will be able to automate many of the manual tasks associated with app development to build hybrid cloud solutions across public, private and on-premises infrastructure faster. CSC and IBM hope to expand PaaS developer exo-system.

IBM also announced it is partnering with Tech Mahindra to build a platform for the development of cloud-based apps for its clients on Bluemix Dedicated, a single-tenant version of Bluemix. Per a recent press release, through this alliance, IBM will provide an open, flexible cloud environment to enable Tech Mahindra’s developers to build cloud-native and cloud enabled applications with a scalable model. Tech Mahindra will train 5,000 of its own developers on how to build advanced apps on Bluemix for the hybrid cloud, a combination of public, private and on premise environments that link systems of record such as core banking and accounting systems with systems of engagement, such as mobile, situational and social apps.
To increase developer productivity, IBM announced Secure Passport Gateway which allows self-service to developers to securely connect data and services to Bluemix in minutes through a simple Passport service that keeps IT in control. IBM also announced API Harmony to find a perfect API match for a client’s application using the world’s largest knowledge base of APIs. Bluemix Local is a new initiative to ensure Bluemix is ready in a hybrid cloud environment.

and has dedicated hundreds of developers to advancing open technologies for the hybrid cloud market.
IBM announced that it is bringing portability to enterprise applications by adopting these open standards to easily move enterprise workloads across environments to bring the app closer to the data or the data closer to the app.
Through IBM Enterprise Containers, the company is trying to help developers rapidly build and deliver applications by extending native Linux containers with Docker APIs to provide enterprise class visibility, control and security as well as an added level of automation. Solutions developed in a cloud environment could be brought to on-premises systems for execution, allowing many of the benefits of cloud computing to be realized for data that cannot be moved to cloud for processing for reasons of data sensitivity, size, or performance.
IBM DataWorks is a fairly new tool to find, refine, enrich and deliver trusted data regardless of whether the data resides on public or private cloud. IBM also introduced new management tools for enhanced visibility and control of clients’ hybrid environments with a single, end-to-end view. Other cloud enhancements announced by IBM include capabilities in orchestration of cloud services and new security features that protect the most vital data and applications using analytics across the enterprise, public and private clouds and mobile devices.
IBM also announced the general availability of the Watson Personality Insights service, which allows developers to integrate new capabilities to analyze trends and patterns in diverse, high volume social media and other public data streams.
Expansion of Softlayer Infrastructure as a Serive (IaaS) Data Centers

IBM announced that it continues to build out SoftLayer’s computing capacity with the addition of new cloud centers in Sydney and Montreal. Both facilities are set to open within the next 30 days. Once launched, IBM will have opened five SoftLayer cloud centers in less than four months, including recently established facilities in Frankfurt, Germany; Querétaro, Mexico; and Tokyo, Japan. Connected to the initial $1.2 billion investment in cloud services that IBM announced in 2014, the new computing capacity broadens the company’s cloud footprint in both Australia and Canada, bringing the full SoftLayer portfolio to local doorsteps. The new cloud centers are each the second of their kind to be opened in their respective countries, giving customers the option for in-country data redundancy.
Additionally, as part of the investment, IBM has committed to opening cloud centers in Milan, Italy and Chennai, India before the year is out, with more sites to be announced later this year. The additional cloud centers give IBM Cloud customers even more locations and options for creating their ideal public, private, or hybrid cloud environments.
Softlayer offers IaaS for demanding cloud applications and self-service provisioning for both virtual and dedicated bare metal servers—with promise of deployment in just minutes for virtual and hours for bare metal. Bluemix runs on SoftLayer cloud infrastructure as well.

IBM is positioning itself as a one-stop vendor for IaaS, PaaS and related services. There have been several platform vendors that have been making strides in IaaS and PaaS (see VCloudNews coverage) in the past year. For a company that has been slow in the cloud arena, this week has been significant in demonstrating that CEO Virginia Rometty and IBM’s vision is now turning into reality as the company gets serious about executing on a global end to end cloud strategy.
